Flutist Stefani Starin has
performed internationally as a soloist and chamber musician including at
Carnegie Hall, New York Philharmonic Horizons New Virtuosity Series, World
Music Days in Norway, US Arts Festival in Germany, the Barbicon, Bang-On-A-Can,
Sonic boom and New Music America. She has recorded for Musical Heritage
Society, Opus One, Mode, Lovely, I Virtuosi, Point, Innova, and Aurora
records. As a soloist she has received awards from The Martha Baird
Rockefeller Foundation, The Alice Ditson Fund, and Affiliate Artists.
Starin is a specialist in contemporary music and is a leader in the development
of microtonal possibilities for flute. She performs primarily on
a Eva Kingma quarter-tone flute built by Brannon Brothers. Many composers
have written especially for her and she has performed many world premiers.
As a champion of new and experimental music, she co-founded the prominent
new music ensemble, Newband, in 1977, currently Ensemble-in-Residence at
Montclair State University, New Jersey, and has served as Co-director since.
Stefani is a certified Suzuki and Orff instructor. She continues
to perform in a wide range of musical styles in the metropolitan New York
area. She is currently on the faculties of the Department of Music at Montclair
State University, the Masters school, The Music Conservatory of Westchester,
and has an ever growing studio at her home in Nyack.
